Building Concrete Forms, Tips and Techniques in Carpentry

Here you will find general information, strategies, and techniques when building concrete forms in carpentry. Concrete forms are built to hold wet concrete. Once the form is built the wet concrete gets poured in the form, this is usually done by a truck, wheel borrow, or shovel.

When the concrete dries the form is then stripped. After the form is stripped you will have your finish product. This method is used commonly when building bridges, curves, and foundation of buildings, pillar, steps, and walls. Majority of this work is done outside in extreme weather conditions.

Doing this work is very exciting. Sometimes carpenters are working in the middle of highways as cars are passing by at high speeds. Or they may be required to walk across a plank carrying a sheet of plywood on a windy day and one wrong move and they fall into a lake. Now that's exciting. Carpenters get dirty as well, having to work in the mud and rain swinging a hammer trying to put nails in wood or using a sledge hammer trying to sink a four foot steak in muddy ground. This is the hardcore part of carpentry building concrete forms.

_Before building the concrete form all material such as plywood and two by fours should be inspected for cracks and serious flaws. Using messed up material will give you weak parts in your form and result to a blow out meaning wet concrete pours or blows out the form which means you failed to do the job right. A carpenter's main objective is to not have blowouts plain and simple.

_While building remember to build accordingly to what your customer wants

_Always brace and support your forms correctly.
There are no short cuts.

_Its better to overbuild than it is to under build. Overbuilding assures you that there will not be any blow out.

_Using the right nails for the job is very important. Using the wrong size nails can result to a blow out. Also use enough nails.

_All steaks metal or wood should be nailed in the ground until they are at least 3 feet in.

_When swinging your hammer remember it's all in the wrist let your wrist do the swinging

_After you are done building the form look over your work make sure you did not forget anything.

Essential Steps on How to Build a Concrete Slab

A concrete slab is the most basic part of any building's foundation. These concrete slabs are made from steel reinforced concrete and are usually 12-16 centimeters thick. These specific concrete slabs are usually made for floors and ceilings. There are thinner slabs and these are used for making exterior pavements.

How does one go about building a concrete slab? The first thing you have to do is find out the size and the distance of the concrete slab. Use any marker or even school chalk to make a visible line from start to ending point. If you are making a visible line on grass, you could use a thicker amount of ground chalk or clear out the line of grass so that the ground is flat. Always try to get the line straight so that no materials can be lost in the process.

After you find the distance, the next step is to build a mold that will hold the concrete mix. To make a mold, you can use straight and smooth boards to define the shape. You can also use screws to join and take apart the boards if you need to use them on another mold elsewhere.

Before placing the mold, you may have to dig a slight ditch two inches deep so that the mold would stand straight. When the mold has been properly placed, you should make a square frame on the corners of the area- above the corner and under it. This ensures that the corners are reinforced.

Prior to filling the mold with concrete, you have to fill the lower portion of the mold with gravel, then with rocks before the concrete is poured. This ensures the slab is strong. This also means you will save on concrete mix since the majority of the slab is composed of any rock or gravel found around the area.

You should always remember to follow the mixing instructions to the letter as stated on the package. Any deviation of the mix may make the concrete weak and may crack easily. You should continue to pour the mix over the gravel and rocks evenly and make sure every crack is filled.

When the concrete has been evenly filled over the gravel and rocks, you should let the concrete set. If you wish you can decorate the concrete with colored rocks or other rocks of your fancy. Always allow extra time for the concrete to fully harden before attempting to put pressure on it.

Once the concrete has hardened, you can then remove the mold by loosening the screws and the boards. If there are any depressions along the mold, you can pack it with soil until it is filled.

Other options you can do after the concrete has hardened is to put grass along side or use decorative borders or fences.

In a nutshell this is the process on how to build a concrete slab.

Concrete Vs Pavers

Poured concrete is the most common material used for outdoor spaces and offers the advantage of a durable surface with plenty of design options to match any landscape. Pavers are individual pieces that could have an interlocking or square-edged design and can be made of different materials such as pre-cast concrete, bricks, stone slabs, or cobbles. Pavers are used as an alternative to concrete in paving driveways, patios, walkways and other exterior areas.

Cost and Installation
The cost per square foot of concrete is lower than any type of pavers, making it a more affordable paving material. Concrete also offers savings on labour costs and time because its installation is relatively easier than installing pavers, which require tedious site preparation as the base must be packed extremely well so the pieces will not settle.

Visual Appeal
Without question, pavers look a lot better than a plain grey concrete paving. The colours and texture of pavers exhibit natural charm. The great thing is concrete is such a versatile material that many techniques can be done to it to completely transform its appearance. Being able to resemble real pavers is just one of the effects that can be achieved with concrete, without the price tag of pavers. Concrete can be stamped, stained, engraved, scored, stencilled, and embedded with stones, to name a few possibilities.

Maintenance
Concrete slabs are practically maintenance-free, especially if they are sealed which makes the surface impervious to all kinds of spills and stains. With pavers, the material itself is also low maintenance but the spaces between each piece often need regular care because weeds, grass and moss will grow in these joints. Aside from regularly removing weeds before they infest the area, the owner should also watch out for shifting pavers and cracks on mortared pavers. Brick and concrete pavers are also susceptible to stains. The gravel or sand in between the joints

Durability
Concrete slabs are significantly more durable than pavers but ground movement greatly affects concrete, making it more prone to cracking if the soil underneath it becomes unstable although its surface will still remain flat. Pavers, however, will not crack when the ground settles because the settling will affect individual units. However, they could become tripping hazards when some of the pavers shift up as a result of ground movement.

Repair and Replacement
This is where pavers have an advantage over concrete. Since pavers consist of separate units, if a couple of pavers get damaged, you just take out those pieces and replace them with new ones - easy and not expensive. It's the opposite with concrete if the slab suffers severe damage and calls for replacement. The whole slab would have to be removed and a new concrete surface installed. Such a problem can be greatly avoided by hiring a professional concrete contractor to do your concrete work to ensure quality base prep and concrete installation. Also, do note that concrete replacement is always the last resort and is done only when the structure is no longer sound. Cosmetic problems on the concrete's surface can be repaired or the concrete resurfaced at reasonable cost.

Combining Pavers and Concrete
As you can see, concrete and pavers have their own advantages and disadvantages. If you're having a hard time deciding which to use, why not combine them? Concrete makes a great base for pavers. Laying pavers over concrete will eliminate problems with pavers moving out of place and creating uneven surfaces. Consult with a professional concrete contractor to explore this option.

Amiga Longplay [246] Dune II: The Battle For Arrakis

www.recordedamigagames.org Played by Ironclaw ---------------------------------------- Ok, this video is actually over 9 hours long, but it shows as 4 hours and 22 mins, so guess there is a length limit at YouTube, BUT, at the end of the vid (at 4 hours, 22 mins) it continues to play the rest of the movie, but in the background... weird... well, you'll see if you jump there. Anyway, like with ALL our movies, they can be downloaded from our site in perfect quality etc. Hmm, maybe the length limit isn't 4h 22m, as my Simon The Sorcerer II movie is 4h 31m: watch?v=Y6QKTEVJiX8. ---------------------------------------- A quickly written comment. (spelling errors and stuff maybe) This game was recorded on request by one of the members of the RAG site (sign up and post your request too and someone might record it). When I played this games as a kid, I played as the Harkonnen (my first and only pick, just because I liked the color), not knowing they were the most powerful House. The game was fairly simple. I wanted this movie to be a bit special, so I asked around which House were the weakest, and they all said it was Ordos. Seems like very few people have completed the game with the Ordos. People knowing this also don't play as them just because of that. The ingame music (the one when playing, not the intro, cut scenes or the outro) in the Amiga version sucks (in my opinion), so I turned off the music in the first mission as I planned to add nicer music later when editing the ...
